Loved it (Video Games) http://owensoft.net/v4/item/2361/
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona3 was one of the first games I acquired with the PS2 I bought in 2010 (with 10 other games). I had never really heard of it before but reviews said it was an excellent RPG game. Five years later I can finally say that the reviews are correct.

I have many hobbies and video games are just one of them which is why it took me 5 years and over a hundred hours of gameplay time to reach to the end boss. And since I have multiple games playing at the same time I have to do a juggling act into order to experince as much of each of as I can before I die. Persona3 is a long game and different from the Final Fantasy games of which I am accustomed (FF3, FF8, FF9, FF10), it is more of time management game than a grind fest with a story.

While there is some grinding the game more revolves around the school life of the protagonist, making friends and forming relationships rather than finding the next bad boss to topple.

At the end of the day I give Persona3 very high ratings. The last boss is very difficult but the game is a very nice experiences for people who like JRPGs.

The good thing with playing old games is that you have money left over just buy other stuff; I finally get to dig into Persona4 which bought last year even before finishing Persona3.

by owen comment
Sat, 28 Jan 2017 18:10:54 -0600 http://owensoft.net/v4/item/2314/ No Mans Sky is Game of the Year (Video Games) http://owensoft.net/v4/item/2314/
When all is said and done NMS is the only new game released this year. People have already started making lists of games that you should try out if you did not like NMS. Hype aside all these lists are bullshit.

If someone came up to me and said "Street Fighter's story sucks here is a game called Mass Effect which totally does it better and has some fighting in it too!". I would laugh in her face. "What nonsense talk!?". These games are not even in the same genre! You want to compare NMS to a turn-based top down strategy game? And recommend people play it after they have experienced the wonder that is NMS? Lol. No one will ever be the same.

This type of thinking is nonsensical. NMS is not just about its story or its pointless collect-a-ton game play or its lore or post effects. No Mans Sky is the sum of its parts - it is about bringing these odd/tedious game play mechanics together in a way which has never been done before. Of course your mileage may vary but no one lives forever and no game appeals to every player. Some are gonna be left crying for multiplayer - poor lonely souls.

To die in a place that does not know your name. God knows you lonely souls

NMS has literally changed how we look at game art. It may not be obvious now but at some point in the future all games will have procedural art or procedural assets. Variety is the spice of life. No longer will we be plagued with NPC clones in every town or predictable sidequests.

Of course Mass Effect's story is better than the story in Street fighter but the people playing street fighter are not totally invested in the story - they would "like" to have story - but in the end all they want to do is throw fire balls and dragon punchs all day long! Sitting down and making dialog choices is not what fighting games are about.

Another person said that Uncharted 4 should be game of the year but seriously its the 4th game in a series of almost identical games. If I were to choose one I would say the collecter's editions are a better game than any one title in the series. Each game has been done, updated and redone - it is time we can try something new now.

What NMS brings to the table is a new take on the old rinse and repeat games that have been released over the years - the constant polishing and up-rez-ing of tired genres of open-world games with skill trees that have been stale since Grand Theft Auto: Sandreas. NMS sky is a big experiment in bridging the gap between hardcore space sims and reading sci-fi novels. It brings enough dumb stuff together and bakes a little pie that might not full your belly but you certainly will remember eating it.

And thats why NMS should be game of the year - It is the sum of these little dumb things that makes it great.

A new final fantasy might be released soon and we all know what it is going to be, we all know that its going to be an RPG with healing potions and pheonix downs. Nothing is a suprise anymore. We will look at the gaint monsters like we were seeing Shadow of the Collossi for the first time and be in awe of its 30fps glowry. A new Call of duty is going to drop and its probably going to have better space combat than NMS and even better gun play and online multiplayer but who cares? Team death match - capture the flag. Its all the same stuff with more polygons. Give us new stuff. Sci-book covers!

by owen comment
Fri, 19 Aug 2016 17:28:38 -0500 http://owensoft.net/v4/item/2207/ Got me some PS2 component cables (Video Games) http://owensoft.net/v4/item/2207/
I bought a component cable (6 plug Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr) for my PS2 slim today at Royal PC (after watching a video about it online ) for the price of a movie ticket. It makes a world of a difference on the current HDTVs which are much cheaper now than when the PS2 originally came out in 2000. Make sure you use the composite cable to setup the ps2 colour mode before you attach the new cables because I spent almost an hour trying to figure out why they weren't working on my television and was wondering if I had bought defective cables. Leave the PS2 disk cover open and then go into the settings with the old A/V cables. Thank god for the internet, I found this review that helped me figure out that the setting was the problem.

I can finally enjoy Gran Turismo 4 in crisp 1080p HD. I still have the super license tests to complete. I think the license tests may actually be the only reason to play GT games. GT does get daunting at times but it has the best graphics of all the games I own and is probably the easiest to jump back into after I have been on a long hiatus. There is not much to playing a racing game, just takes lots of practice, fortitude and failed driving tests.

A setup like this would have probably cost 2000 USD back in the day (2002). I might be able to finally tackle my PS2 backlog of games I had been hording for a couple years now. I still have Persona 3 to finish and also to find a copy of Persona 4. Even with though Persona 4: Golden was released on the PS Vita I would much rather drop the money on the original version than invest in the abomination that is the PS Vita. Fcuk a remake/reboot/re-release!

The new cables do not do much to improve Hitman: Blood Money but I had already finished all 3 hitman games so not much of a loss there. Blood money is by far the best Hitman game. Tekken 5 benefits from the cables a little but that was already a pretty nice looking game. Newer PS2 games that were made after the year 2004 seem to benefit the most from the cables. Make sure you check the display settings in-game to see what can be changed. The mini-map and timer in GTA: San Andreas and basically all the text in games are crisper.

I think I am lost somewhere in Silent Hill 2. Doubt I will ever restart that game. Some games seem to be impossible to get back into once your have reached a point and stopped playing. Its like I forgot what exactly I was doing or where I was going. Almost the same problem with God Of War. God Of war got boring really fast like a gigantic pizza that you want to eat but cannot because you are full. GOW even has "progressive scan" on the back of the box but no other game seems to have that label. I have God of war 2 as well but if I never finish the first one, I will not be able to start the second - I live by rules.

My black label copy of ICO showed up as "Invalid Formate" on my tv, I'm not sure why. Shadow of Colossi worked fine. ICO was released in 2001 while SOC was a 2005 game so it proves my earlier point of newer games working better. Final Fantasy 10 works fine as awful a game as it is - doubt I will be getting back into that mess of a game.

The colours are more vibrant in We Heart Katamari. This Game in particular seems to benefit the most from the component cables. Everything is less washed out and less blurry with less jaggies. You can certainly tell the difference in both the 2d and the 3d scenes.

Conclusion

If you are going to be kicking it old school on the PS2 (or the Wii). And you have a new Flat Screen HD TV then you definately should spend the extra money to get the 5 plug component cables. The only problem you will have is figuring out what system you are gonna connect to the back of the tv next.

by owen comment
Sun, 09 Aug 2015 09:00:23 -0500 http://owensoft.net/v4/item/1986/ Old Dreamcast (Video Games) http://owensoft.net/v4/item/1986/
I bought this like 8 years ago and played tons of 4 player Virtua Tennis on it. Eventually it stopped reading in compact disks. I really need to give this to some body who wants one and is able to fix it. It should be too hard to get it working again.

by owen comment
Tue, 21 Jan 2014 14:19:15 -0600 http://owensoft.net/v4/item/1672/ Thoughts on E3 2012 (Video Games) http://owensoft.net/v4/item/1672/
If you follow video game entertainment at all you might have known that the E3 conference completed last week. Here is my round up;

The Last of Us

Another murder simulator from Naughty Dog. I really think they should go into making movies. Movies are much cheaper and would make them tons more money. How do you go from avoiding bad guys to killing EVERY BODY IN THE BUILDING?

I can see it now, news gets around fast in this post apocoloyptic world - everybody wants to kill you and eat your brain. I have a hatred for super smart zombies as well. Zombies setting traps and baracades for you to fall in to - it seriously makes no sense.

The Last Of Us looks like scripted mess and I'm not going to stop saying it until the Naughty Dog fanbois grow a second brain that is capable of recognising the difference between a playable cutscene and a game. I am not going to even try and explain what a game is, its something like Pac-man when you enter the maze but instead of the ghosts roaming around the room, they are cussing and talking to themselves loudly.

I am saying that its going to be a bad game. All I am saying that it would be a better movie. Which is good thing since you are playing it on the best Bluray player on the market. You can hear a gun shot from a mile away, any shots fire would alert anybody in the area - its time video games stopped using shitty mechanics.

Tomb Raider

Nice tits. Getting shot splashes water on the screen. Wow. Not to mention Lara chooses to use a bow when all the baddies are using assualt rifles.

The constant forward push seen in the trailor is pointless as well, only an idiot would enter a river of rushing water while on the side of a cliff. Even the contruction of the environment is void of any logic.

Halo 4

Feels like Metroid Prime.

Just as I said in my Prometheous Review: Never take off your helmet - EVER!

Watch Dogs

Hacking in to cellphones and street lights is not really my thing but those trees and wind effects look top notch.

The user interface looks clean but nothing here convinces me that this game is not another scripted cover based third person shooter. Has blade runner vibe as well, hopefully there are no stages on trains.

Beyond: Two Souls

Not much you can tell from a long ass cutscene.

Maybe its a point and click game.

Assasin's Creed 3

So stealthy he doesn't even leave foot prints in the snow.

Nintendo Land

Nintendo is at it again with its family games. Nothing New here.

As long as I don't have to hold the controller up to the screen all day.

by owen comment
Thu, 14 Jun 2012 14:53:02 -0500 http://owensoft.net/v4/item/1459/ Bit.Trip - Runner - Wii Review (Video Games) http://owensoft.net/v4/item/1459/
Runner is a game that could only have been designed by Hilter. Beating/completing the game requires dedicating GIGABYTES of you brain towards memorizing devilish jumping and ducking patterns in perfect order. Failing to do so will result in you getting sent directly back to the beginning of the level - no check point - no short cuts - NO NOTHING.

This game is GOOD but I certainly would not give this game a 10 because clearly there were some awful decisions made in the designs/layouts of some of the levels. You can tell that it is a design issue when EVERYBODY who plays level 1-2 has the same problem with those dam stairs. What makes it worst is that those stairs are the hardest in the whole 1st world. Not even to mention the bonus stages that can only be played once after playing the full stage.

Runner is a novel game but don't buy it unless you have alot of patience and up for the challenge of playing a level ONE HUNDRED TIMES OVER until you are able to commit everything into muscle memory. I give bit.trip: runner a 8 out of 10. Its good but unnecessarily hard.

by owen comment
Sun, 12 Dec 2010 13:32:19 -0600 http://owensoft.net/v4/item/1458/ Best Homebrew Games on the Wii (Video Games) http://owensoft.net/v4/item/1458/
Firstly you will have to figure out how to install the Homebrew Channel. Note that the older your wii the easier it is to install. Anyway after that you will need a SD card to copy the game onto so that you can play them on your Wii. To download the game click download on the top right of the games web page.

Now here are my top 10 favourite games from wiibrew.org

WiiSPACE

A top down Shoot-'em-up in space along the lines of Asteriods. Using the nunchuck to steer and the pointer to shoot. Very polished game with enough challenge to keep you comming back. Multiple types of enemies and boss battles. Simple graphics and 4 players at the same time give it a arcade feel. Classic and Gamecude controller support make it a must have. 9 out of 10.

Link: wiibrew.org/wiki/WiiSPACE

MahJongg Wii

MahJongg Wii is a Mahjongg solitaire tiles game written specifically for the Wii. One of the most polished games on the Homebrew Channel, great menus and background music. Single or 2 player. Many missions, various was to customise the charactor and multiple types of guns. Reminds me of true Lies on the SNES. 9 out of 10.

Link: wiibrew.org/wiki/C-DogsSDL

Flying Saucers

A simple 2D space shooting game. in which you shoot flying things on the screen with 1 to 4 players. You don't need to take your SD card out. You don't even need a computer! You can also delete homebrew you no longer want. 10 out of 10

Link: wiibrew.org/wiki/Homebrew_Browser

I will add more games as I come across them. I can safely say that its precision is its downfall - yes its precise but if I have to throw my arm out just to get a gold medal on Sports Champions then its not at all worth it! I like may arms, I play video games to avoid REAL sports. I'm a skinny guy, I don't need exercise, how are you going to beat the game if the simplest most redundant moves make you arm tired after half and hour? Why can't I do a horizontal slash?

I've played wii sports resort for eight straight hours, I wouldn't dare try that with the Move. PSMove fanatics need to start telling people their medal status on Sports champions because I don't think they are playing the game for very long.

The on-screen pointer lags abit too and the menu controls for some of the games are inconsistent. I get tempted to point at the screen and click stuff but some game I played had no screen pointer. Oh and another thing, the dam buttons around the move button, I hope people get accustomed to them eventually but they kinda confusing to use during play. Hopefully in the future the software averages out between exercise machine and gaming controler. If you never played the wii before then The move will be new ground for you but for the millions in Wii land; Precision does not equal fun. But right now I give it a 7 for poorly inplemented Wii Clone.

Bottom Line: Playstation Move sucks right now, at least on the software side until some good software comes out. The hardware maybe precise but that is also its downfall.

by owen comment
Sun, 17 Oct 2010 09:37:09 -0500 http://owensoft.net/v4/item/1254/ Mario Kart Wii Sucks (Video Games) http://owensoft.net/v4/item/1254/
Here I will list reasons in my opinion why the Wii release of the popular series is probably the worst version ever;

Bikes. Why would someone add a second type of vehicle into a game that is called Mario "Kart"? Not only that but make it so that they are faster and better handling than regular karts.

Having 12 racers breaks the balance of the item distribution. You either have to be at the very last position or at first to be certain of what you are going to get in your item box. And even then you might get something that is of little help.

The item distribution itself is broken. Try playing a 2 player vs match without the computer AI. What you will end up with are 2 racers trying to kill each other with bananas. If a gap is created between the players it is impossible to catch the other player because all you will get are bananas.

Losing your hard earned item when you drop of a ledge, or get hit by lightning makes it impossible to maintain any kind of strategy when holding items or retaliating after being hit. You either got to use it as soon as you get it or pray that somebody in last place doesn't use a lightning. Item hording is a choice, removing it only make the game shallow.

Stupid, superficial items. Why would you have a item in a game that when used has not effect on computer controlled players?

Lack of realistic hit physics. Now I know, "realistic" may not be the appropriate word in this scenario but I remember when I hit a player with a red shell while he/she was in a power slide he would go flying off a edge into a hole. Yeah I know it is evil to do but it was fun and required exact timing. Now, nothing happens the person get hit, flies straight up in the air on the spot. Pure BS.

Team Battles should be optional. In fact the whole battle mode is a mere shadow of what it once was.

Blue shells that explode. I've read about this numerous times. The last thing I've noticed is that if the first place racer has already crossed the finish line then the blue shell comes after whomever is next in rank. Meaning a world of pain for those who just want to be left alone with their third place position.

Having more over powered items in the game without removing the old items throws off the random item selection mechanic. I can't remember the last time I got a fake question mark box. While at he same time you get bananas, 3 bananas, 3 boost, single boost, gold boost, green shell, and tons of other stuff that becomes unnecessary now, because the only real item that can make you win is the Bullet Bill or Star. Every other item becomes a useless waste of space. Bomb, Green shells? useless.

Something is off with the controls I can't really tell exactly but the rainbow track is awful to drive on.

Poor hit detection on shells. Total travesty!

The menus look very primitive.

Power sliding seems to be made useless, not sure if its because of the track design or the handling of the vehicles but something is not right with it. People who can do manual power slides seems to have no advantage over the regular automatic mode.

Tracks; I am not sure about these new tracks. They seem to interfere with the player more than necessary and have no good short cuts or places to jump across. The tracks in Mario Kart Wii seem more like site seeing trips rather than race courses. Odd bumps and distractions are all around. The Mario Track from the N64 version is probably the best track on the thing.

Basically the more you suck at Mario Kart Wii - the more you enjoy it.

by owen comment
Thu, 11 Jun 2009 14:31:47 -0500 http://owensoft.net/v4/item/1231/ The DSi Sucks (Video Games) http://owensoft.net/v4/item/1231/
If you don't know what that means then feel free to ignore this post. For this post I'm just going to be dropping random thoughts and rambling wildly about the device that was recently released in America to cure cancer.

Nintendo is releases another gimped product.

Yeah the Dsi is pretty much done as far as features are concerned. They should add GB, and GBA games to the shop. Apart from that in my opinion its the same as the DS lite which is pretty disappointing. They should have added some must have features such as rumble, and tilt detection (which when I think about it could be done by using the camera to watch the background). hmmm...

I bet they could add GBA cart with a sd slot and new firmware to run the DSi operating system from the cart. f the cameras. but will they do it? nooooooo because the dsi is different not by much, but just enough to kill any hows hopes of merging the two while still allowing them to live side by side.

i'm pretty disapointed with it as a upgrade. Its basically ds lite 1.2, wasted oppurtunity to produce something worth its money.

The only useful feature I have seen is a very basic hack which is totally useless.

It reminds me of the current gen DSi. But I guess people will still buy it - which is the problem. it reminds me in the sense of it being a half-assed/poor upgrade over the previous version of the same system. I mean when you compared NES->SNES (a real upgrade in everyway) to GB->GBA (more colors? faster processor? same buttons?). There needs to be new word for what they are doing; something like "side-grade" instead of upgrade.

The quality of SNES vs GBA is better overall in every way BECAUSE of the buttons. the GBA though faster than a snes is not a better upgrade. Similar to what is happening with the DS and DSi now. Minor updates only put more plastic in land fills. Build good hardware and people will keep it forever.

The DSi does NOTHING well....NOOOOTTTHHINNNGG. My old cellphone takes better pictures, plays mp3s and has more internal memory. I can imagine that they were going to put 512mb of internal memory in it and then some body said "wait the wii has 512mb, we can't do that, it would look like we are purposely making handicapped hardware to keep our customers buying new upgraded versions" of last gen hardware.

I really don't know why they have to half-*** EVERYTHING! yeah they get good battery life which the psp failed at, but I mean theres got to be a middle ground. and apparently you loose a couple hours of battery life as well.

My 3 year old motorola phone plays mp3s. They better not try to sell mp3 functionality in the future.

WTF is with that dam manual that they pack into the box? Its got like a 2 trees worth of paper in it. The manual comes in 3 languages and is roughly 90% of wieght of the package. This is a factor of total laziness and no concern for the environment. I'm sure that manual alone costs 10 dollars to produce and kills endangered animals.

The 1000 free points that they give you is basically a gateway drug for DSI shovel-ware shop. Just a enough reason to get you to find a nerd to hook up your WIFI point and hook into their global Dsi tracking website. Its masterful. Thats all I can say. Its probably even included in the price of the Dsi.

I don't hate it. I'm just disappointed :(

I don't know if the people realise this yet but when nintendo releases a new console, all your downloaded clocks and calenders will be tied to the dsi that you bought them on and so you may have to buy them ALL OVER AGAIN.

by owen comment
Wed, 15 Apr 2009 09:04:14 -0500 http://owensoft.net/v4/item/1065/ So I got a xbox360 to borrow (Video Games) http://owensoft.net/v4/item/1065/
So I got a xbox360 to borrow in exchange for my Wii. Apparently Carnarge is a first-person shooter nut. I am going to now review all the games I got my paws onto. I should note though that I am from the PC-FPS crowd so I hate the aiming with the right analog stick. So it may affect my liking of certain games. Note also that I've played alot of games and have never seen a xbox360 upclose. What I notice about the xbox 360 games is that often times it like I'm watching a movie instead of playing a game. Or I'm playing the game so that I can get to watch the next movie. I like playing music in the background while I'm playing games (sometimes). The user profile and achievement system is good and nicely implemented. So without here goes;

The xbox360

I ripped Eminems: The Curtain and The best of Sade to the harddrive. Its kinda nice, but the brick makes alot of noise and fear it may red ring if I play it for more that 3 hours.

Turok

Lots of green and the knife kills everything. I like the knife. Nothing more to say right now.

Call of Duty 3

More WWII, I may play this later if I get drunk enough.

Just Cause

250,000 Acres of bush but it has beautiful water. I kinda ran around in this game for a bit and might decide to eventually finish it. The vehicles are kinda meh but the overall game is like GTA on a Caribbean island. The AI is flaky at most some points and the music is mental but the freedom and the diversity of the island makes it a interesting adventure shooter game. Except maybe when you have to travel 2500 kilometers to your next mission ON FOOT! For a sandbox that big the main story is incredibly short, it ended before I realised that I reached the 25th mission. Its still fun though, at least I can tackle the side missions.
The game engine is superb;

Can't wait for part 2.

Prey

So the game started out in bar and I'm like "cool, I can turn off the lights just like in Dukenukem". Then 10 minutes later I got abducted by aliens - I meant really? Why do you have to set you game in a dam alien space ship? Everything is dark and shiny in the Doom3 engine and I'm like why am I here? Rooms, rooms everywhere! sometimes I wondered why aliens had so many unecessary rooms with one entry point and one exit. I mean if a fire should break out on that spaceship those aliens are fucked.

The Darkness

I watched a guy play this game and I think he was skipping the cut scenes because the story lost me at some point while he was going through the subways. Why does the dude like to talk to himself so much? Was he born yesterday? zero back story. I didn't play this one at all - couldn't bother.

Condemned

Dark and moody. From what I heard about the game I kept my gun close to me until the first mission when a CRACKHEAD KNOCKS ME OUT AND TAKES IT AWAY :(. I end up chasing the guy through a unfinished crack house. The main character of this game must live in the worst part of the nieghbourhood because the whole game looks like a big UNFINISHED CRACKHOUSE. Not saying that the game looks bad, but can the environment be any less depressing? I forgot to go back to this one.

Full Auto

Two words: Sucks Ass. I have to admit it gets kinda better if you play the career mode - single player. Though on the canyon track the cars tend to launch into the air if you touch certain parts of the wall.

Kane and Lynch: Dead Men

The aiming in this game is baaad - I think the pointer moves too fast or too slow or something. High production values but the game itself I think is just too cluster-phobic. Point black shots will often miss, cops/enemies rain down on you, bullets everywhere and most likely you WILL ALWAYS GET SHOT FIRST.

Quake 4

I like it, simple stages that actually make sense. Some slow down and stupid A to B story telling. I am this point where I come out into the open and I see this tunnel across the way, so I make a B line for the tunnel only to have the mothership land infront of me. So I say to my self I hope I don;t have to go into that stupid ship just some EXTRA WASTE OF TIME STORY CRAP. So said, so done, I get forced into the stupid ship for a half and hour of talking only to get sent out INTO THE SAME DAM TUNNEL.

Blacksite Area 51

So far it seems like another generic army shooter. Starts in Iraq, then in mission 2 goes to the Nevada desert which looks EXACTLY like IRAQ. I have seen enough sand for one game. Simple run and gun game, I might attempt to finish it. After playing it abit more its just too "A to B". The AI is silly, the level design is linear and has nothing new to offer to the player. The audio is good though, it would have been a better movie, I would sit and watch it. Finished it, waste of time, totally forgettable. I'm beginning to hate UnReal Engine, it seems like just an excuse to make stupid pretty games with no substance.

Topspin 2

Tennis. It doesn't seem to be better than Virtual Tennis on the Dreamcast. Its ok.

John Woo Presents Stranglehold

Its good. Its like Max Payne on steriods. Nice voice acting, gameplay, cut scenes. I will definately try to finish this one just to see who else gets killed IN STYLE!! After a while so many enemies came into the stage that I just stopped playing. Its ridiculous, my hands got tired.

by owen comment
Tue, 20 May 2008 19:52:42 -0500 http://owensoft.net/v4/item/1055/ The Nintendo Wii Review (Video Games) http://owensoft.net/v4/item/1055/
Originally it was called the "Nintendo Revolution" then close to launch Nintendo renamed it to just "Wii". Now when this name was announced I was like "wtf! are they crazy?". Well apparently if you build it - they will come and almost 2 years later the Wii is still selling like hot cakes. The console is self is pretty simple it has the motion controls used for playing games and it lacks the ability to play DVD movies.

Hardware

Its white like a ipod. It seems that white is the new black. Technically the Wii is not a Playstation 3 or a Xbox 360. Nintendo went for the cheapest route possible which is probably why it costs $250 USD in and only has 512 mb of internal storage. Its very quiet and has a SD card slot on the front and 2 USB ports on the back - thats it. The controllers use bluetooth to communicate with the console and use AA batteries for power. Instead of building a whole new console from scratch Nintendo used an upgraded version of their previous console (the Gamecube) which makes it 100% compatible with the games and controllers released between the year 2000 and 2006 - which is always a good thing. The Wii also has built in Wifi which you can use to surf the internet on you television or download games from the Nintendo "Virtual Console" Service ( referred to as the VC).

Software

On the software side good games are few and far between. The Wii is a patient man's console. There are alot of games available but you will have to wait 3 or 4 months for the AAA titles to be release. AAA titles are usually well polished and include the usual Mario, Zelda, Metroid first party Nintendo titles and a select few good third party releases. On the other hand the Wii comes with Wii Sports which include 5 mini games. Most people will play these games forever. The VC is the third option for getting games - basically every monday morning Nintendo releases approximately 3 (Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis, Graphix 16, etc) games. The games are priced between $5 and $10 USD. The games are downloaded the Wii's internal memory and can be played at anytime and are exact ports which does have a certain nostalgic factor to them - so if you had a NES back when you were young then you can get those same games again without the blowing. So far I've bought Sonic The Hedgehog, Super Mario Bros and Streets of Rage 2.

Overview

The Wii in essence is a bridge between a VCR and dvd player. Its cheap, unique and has enough "wow" factor for it to standout from the crowd on its own. Its an experience that cannot be found anywhere else, a big gamble which Nintendo surprisingly won. Right now the Wii is in the same position the Playstation 2 was 5 years ago - extremely popular with tons of lackluster/quick to the press video games. Not a bad position, eventually the games came but sometimes I wish it was just a little bit faster.

by owen comment
Sun, 04 May 2008 13:17:50 -0500 http://owensoft.net/v4/item/2/ losing my favourite game (Video Games) http://owensoft.net/v4/item/2/
I'm going to buy The Legend Of Zelda: The WindWaker (it's a video game). Even though I had previously decided that I wasn't going to buy another piece of new technology. I hadn't played the previous 2 games in the series. Lack of funds and such. So I bit the bullet and decided that it was simply too good of a game to miss.
Being a zelda fan, I often like to wonder through never ending dungeons, dark forests, caves and such. Not you'd understand any of this of course. As surreal as it may seem. It's video games pretty fun once you get the hang of it.
minimum requirements: brain, extended attention span and rupees. A whole lotta free time.

by owen comment
Tue, 12 Aug 2003 22:19:26 -0500
